In 1775, he and his father boarded HMS Resolution for a three-year-long expedition into the Pacific Ocean.
His travel account will inspire generations of later naturalists, including Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin, and help geologists explain the Dolomites as fossil reefs.
